This is an open call touring exhibition arranged by the School of Fine Art, History or Art and Cultural Studies at Leeds University. It shows new artists’ books made in response to themes suggested by the title.
The themes relate to travel, displacement, geographies and borders, and migration in recent times and in the past as the effects of such movements of peoples, whether compelled or voluntary, may resound through generations.
My entry for this exhibition is a book that is presented in the form of a yurt, with pages that slot together to form the outer walls beneath a textile tent structure. Nomads, voluntary and involuntary, are represented by the landscape through which they travel, and their livestock and/or transport. The interior is rendered in a ghostly monochrome to represent the way that true nomadic lifestyles are disappearing.
